Hi, I’m Dr. Venincasa, and I’m one of the refractive cataract surgeons at Sweeney Eye Associates. I’m excited to welcome you to your appointment to explore options to improve your vision.
What is a cataract?
A cataract occurs when the natural lens of your eye changes from being clear—like it was when you were born—to yellow or whitish. Once the cataract becomes discolored, it causes very classic symptoms.
The most common cataract symptoms include:
- Problems driving at night with glare and halos
- Difficulty reading up close
- Trouble seeing clearly at a distance
When cataracts begin to affect your quality of life, surgery is the only effective treatment.
At your visit, you’ll learn that there are two different ways we can perform your cataract surgery:
Years ago, all cataract surgery was done manually, with every step performed by hand. Today, most of our patients benefit from laser-assisted cataract surgery. The laser divides the cataract into several pieces, allowing us to remove them more efficiently and with less energy.
Once the cataract is removed, we replace it with a new intraocular lens. Based on your personalized testing, there are several types of lenses we can offer:
- A basic lens will help reduce glare and halos, but you may still need glasses for both distance and near vision.
- Depending on your needs, you may qualify for advanced lens implants that reduce or even eliminate your need for glasses at distance, for computer use, or even for reading up close.
I’m excited to meet you and look forward to helping you improve your vision.
