The Future of Glaucoma Treatment: What You Need to Know About iDose

Glaucoma is a condition that affects many people. Most of the time, it occurs when the pressure inside the eye is too high, which can damage the optic nerve and lead to permanent vision loss.

The standard treatment for glaucoma typically involves the use of medicated eye drops — and sometimes, surgical procedures.

However, eye drop medications can be challenging. Patients need to apply them at least once — and sometimes multiple times — per day. That can lead to forgetfulness or inconsistent use. Additionally, some medications may cause toxicity to the eye, resulting in stinging or burning, and if the drops aren’t applied properly, they can’t do their job.

Thankfully, we now have a new option called the iDose® implant.

The iDose® is a tiny implant — so small it’s hard to see with the naked eye. Here, you’re looking at a 10x magnified view of the device. It’s essentially a reservoir that holds years’ worth of glaucoma medication.

Once placed inside the eye, the iDose slowly releases medication over time, maintaining consistent pressure control and eliminating the daily need for topical eye drops.

After several years, we’ll evaluate its efficacy. If needed, the implant can be replaced, or we can explore additional treatment options during your follow-up visit.
