Comprehensive Eye,General Eye Care

Halloween night is one of the most exciting nights of the year, but the fun often comes with risks to your child’s eyes. From sharp costume props to dark sidewalks, preventable eye injuries are common. At Sweeney Eye Associates, we want to help you keep your kids safe while they’re trick-or-treating in the Texas night.

Here are a few simple tips to ensure a safe and spooky Halloween:

  • Avoid Illegal Costume Lenses: Decorative (non-corrective) contact lenses require a prescription and a professional fitting. Lenses bought online or at pop-up shops can cause serious infections and permanent damage due to poor fit and quality. Do not use them.
  • Handle Glow Sticks Carefully: The chemical liquid inside glow sticks is highly irritating to the eye. Teach kids not to break, chew, or squeeze them. If a leak occurs, rinse the eye immediately and thoroughly with water.
  • Prioritize Clear Vision and Visibility: Choose a mask or hat that does not block or restrict your child’s field of vision. Always have them carry a flashlight to light up dark paths and make them easily visible to drivers.
  • Check Costume Props: If a costume includes a sword, wand, or other pointed prop, ensure it has dull, flexible edges and is not so long that it poses a poke hazard when running or walking.

Don’t let an eye injury ruin the holiday. Enjoy the treats, but remember to stay vigilant about eye safety.
