What You Should Know About Refractive Lens Surgery

Traditional LASIK surgery is typically performed for people in their 20s or 30s.

As we get into our mid-40s, however, problems with the natural lens of the eye begin to occur. The lens becomes stiff, less flexible, and immovable — leading to trouble not just with distance vision, but also with near vision.

By the time people reach their 50s, many become candidates for Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE). This procedure is different from LASIK. Instead of reshaping the cornea, RLE removes the aging natural lens and replaces it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL).

Not only can RLE improve distance vision, but it can also restore much of your near vision.

And because the natural lens is replaced, having Refractive Lens Exchange means you will never need cataract surgery later in life.
